Adaeze Okonkwo paints large oil works on unstretched canvas, made over long periods and often reworked. The paintings begin from photographs taken on the street where she grew up, then lose their subject as the surface builds. She works from a first-floor studio on Rye Lane and shows infrequently, preferring to let work accumulate. Her recent paintings are concerned with the way light behaves on wet tarmac and shop plastic.
